The Forum at a glance

Welcome to the Forum of Financial Intelligence Units (FIUs) of the GIABA Member States (FFIU-GMS) also known as the West African Forum of FIUs (WAFFIU)!

Our organization is dedicated to promoting the exchange of information and technical expertise among FIUs in West Africa, with the ultimate goal of combatting money laundering and terrorist financing. By facilitating collaboration between FIUs and other stakeholders, we aim to enhance the regional  effectiveness of anti-money laundering, counter-financing of terrorism and counter-proliferation financing (AML/CFT/CPF) regime.

At the Forum of FIUs, we strive to foster a culture of cooperation and trust among our members. Our organization is committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity, confidentiality, and professionalism. We believe that by working together, we can achieve our shared objective of a safe and secure financial system in West Africa.

Vision

To provide an efficient and effective platform for regional partnership amongst West African Financial Intelligence Units in the global fight against money laundering and its predicates offences, terrorism financing and proliferation.

Mission

To strengthen the capacity and promote technical compliance of the West African Financial Intelligence Units in the implementation of anti-money laundering and combating the financing of terrorism (AML/CFT) regime.

Mandate

To facilitate and encourage the implementation of AML/CFT programs in the Member States through effective technical cooperation and assistance.

RECENT EVENTS

A team from the Secretariat of the Forum recently conducted a comprehensive needs assessment visit to UIF Cabo Verde with the aim of gaining valuable insights into the operational and tecnical capacity of UIF Cabo Verde and the challenges they experience.

The 22nd Meeting of the FIUs Forum took place on the sidelines of the 39th GIABA Plenary in Praia, Cabo Verde. This significant gathering brought together Heads of FIUs and CENTIFs of the 17 Member States of the Forum.

Mr. Stanley Fordwas reappointed  as the President of the Forum of FIUs for an additional term of one year. This momentous decision was reached at the 22nd meeting of the FIUs Forum, which took place on the sidelines of the 39th GIABA Plenary in Praia, Cabo Verde. Mr. Ford’s dedication, leadership, and invaluable contributions have been instrumental in advancing our mission as a Forum.

The Secretariat

The Secretariat is the administrative Headquarters of the Forum and is permanently based in Abuja, Nigeria.

The Secretariat is composed of the Executive Secretary and other staff who are vital for the smooth operation of the Forum.

Objectives of the Forum

  • To provide a platform enabling the FIUs in the ECOWAS region to strengthen their cooperation in the fight against money laundering and its predicate offences, the financing of terrorism and proliferation;
  • To facilitate and encourage the implementation of AML/CFT programs in the Member States;
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of the AML/CFT programmes in the member states.
